Couple buys a camper and gets reported to authorities by a neighbor who assumed they were living in the RV on their own property when they return from their first camping trip

This neighbor is from the breed of people who treat themselves as a street security firm of one, with no budget and unlimited free time

They don't need rules, a board meeting, or even a real problem. All they require is something parked in a driveway that does not match their personal vision of correct, and the neighborhood has become a danger zone that demands official attention.

This is the same brain that calls the city because a lawn looks two inches too tall, or reports a house because a truck sat in the same spot for an entire afternoon. Their issue is that somebody made a choice without submitting it for approval first. A camper is just a vehicle, but to the right kind of neighbor it becomes evidence that standards are slipping and something must be done before the whole block turns into a travel park.

  • After a few years of saving, we managed to get the funds together to finally look at getting a camper. We went to one of the RV Trader locations and found the perfect camper for us. A little 13' job that has a nice bed for the two of us as well as some bunks so we can take grandchildren with us every now and again.

  • We took some vacation time and went to the RV place, paid for it, hooked it up and headed to the campground for a lovely week enjoying it. No more arguing with tents, no more worrying about rain seepage, and having AC was heavenly to sleep in.

  • We left camp this past Saturday and drove home, getting in late. We figured we'd do the clean out Yesterday and today and put it under the carport that's off the driveway. It has canvas sides so that ought to keep most of the weather off of it.

  • Yesterday evening, the police showed up and were concerned that we were living in the camper. Someone had reported us to the police since it's not legal to use an RV in our yard. We explained how we got it last week and had just gotten back from our first trip with it. What people were seeing, was the two of us cleaning it out and getting it ready to put away until the next time we want to use it. The officers accepted the explanation, congratulated us on our new toy and went on their way.

  • Now we don't live in an HOA. We did that once and swore never again. We don't even live near one. There's one a half mile away from us on the right but there's woods between us and them. We have three neighbors.

  • Two of them are across the road from us and while we don't know each other, we do wave at each other. The third is to the left and there's an acre of woods between us so we don't see much of each other.

  • Amoral-Wombat-1138 OP I hadn't thought of that. Altough that doesn't sit well with us since we didn't unhitch it from the truck that the neighbors ought to know by now. Yes the RV was new, but it's attached to the truck that's been there for the past three years. Still possible I suppose, but come on.

  • Facts don’t change these people's mission. Owners can explain, officers can confirm nothing is wrong, and everyone can agree there is no violation. That does not solve the real crisis, which is that a person saw something ordinary and could not resist turning it into a project. Some folks cannot relax unless they are busy rescuing the community from a threat that exists only inside their own head.

  • Fair_Access4368 That is not a logical conclusion though. Who sees a new vehicle on their neighbour's driveway and immediately assumes it must be squatters? Then calls the police without even seeing them?

  • It is also a handy way to feel important without doing anything useful. Not volunteering, or helping, or fixing your own life. It’s easier to just spot something normal, decide it looks suspicious, and make a call. For a few minutes, you are the hero who stopped whatever this was before it spread.

  • SlipInternational439 OP is making the same mistake that their neighbors did. Refusing to have a 15 minute conversation or make a phone call, to let them know it's their camper.

We just came home with a fr king awesome new camper! Don't rat us out to the cops please!" "We left camp this past Saturday and drove home, getting in late."

  • Everyone else gets to watch the show: adults saving for years, buying a camper, taking a trip, coming home, and somehow ending up in a minor encounter with authorities because one person’s idea of a perfect evening is turning a driveway into a courtroom.
